A French Man Under the Aurora – From Teacher to Aurora Explorer

You may have seen me live on Facebook chasing the aurora. You may have read one of my articles or stumbled upon my time-lapse work at Night Lights Films. My name is Adrien Mauduit, and this is the story of how I left a classroom in France and found my purpose under the northern lights in Norway.

From Champagne Fields to Arctic Skies

I was born in the Champagne region of France and spent my childhood exploring nature — from rocks and insects to the night sky. After completing a master’s degree in biological sciences with a specialization in agroecology and environmental management, I set out to inspire others through education.

Teaching in Denmark, I developed a passion for photography. Surrounded by nature in Odsherred, I picked up my camera and started capturing sunsets, noctilucent clouds, and even the elusive northern lights. My science background merged perfectly with my creative side.

The Shift – From Teacher to Photographer

While I loved teaching, my heart was in the stars. I returned to France and dedicated my savings to pursuing astrophotography full-time. The road wasn’t easy. I gave up my social life and lived on little, spending nights alone capturing the cosmos. Slowly, I built a portfolio and shared my work online.

Then, everything changed.

One day, I got a message from the Aurora Borealis Observatory on Senja Island. They wanted to feature my photos. This small gesture led to several shares, new followers, and eventually — an invitation.

Senja – The Game-Changer

I drove to the observatory in early 2017. What was meant to be a short visit turned into a turning point in my life. That first night, the aurora lit up the sky. I helped the staff with guests and answered questions during their live stream. It felt right.

As I was about to leave, Anders Hanssen, the observatory’s founder, stopped me:
“How would you like to work for us?” he asked.
I laughed. But one month later, I returned — this time as staff.

Since then, I’ve been part of a team dedicated to creating unforgettable experiences under the aurora. I run night-sky workshops, guide guests, and share scientific insights about our universe.

The Mission – Inspire Through Light

At the observatory, I finally found balance. I get to photograph, film, teach, and connect with people from all over the world. It’s the perfect fusion of my passions — education and the cosmos.

I also continue my work with Project PoSSUM, an international science program, and operate Night Lights Films, where I produce documentaries and educational content about the night sky.

🌌 Final Words

My journey wasn’t easy. I faced uncertainty, loneliness, and long hours. But I believed in the path I chose. If you’re standing at a crossroads in your life — take the leap. Work hard. Make sacrifices. Be bold.

You never know where the northern lights might lead you.
