Capturing the northern lights is magical—but easy to mess up. Avoid these 10 common mistakes and take your aurora shots to the next level.

1. Wrong Focus
Autofocus doesn’t work well at night. Switch to manual focus and use infinity, then fine-tune using live view.
2. High ISO Without Control
Don’t just max out your ISO—test it. Too high can cause grain, too low = dark images.
3. Long Shutter with Moving Auroras
If aurora is fast, keep shutter under 10 seconds to avoid smudging the light.
4. Weak Composition
The sky is amazing—but include a strong foreground: cabins, trees, ice formations.

5. Not Leveling the Horizon
A tilted shot ruins symmetry. Use in-camera level or fix in post.
6. Too Much Noise Reduction
Overprocessing ruins detail. Apply NR sparingly and shoot in RAW.
7. Wrong White Balance
Use Kelvin 2800–4000 or set to “Daylight” instead of auto.
8. Moving the Tripod Mid-Exposure
Use a remote or timer. Even tiny movement ruins clarity.
9. Forgetting to Check Battery
Cold kills batteries fast. Keep spares in your pocket and swap regularly.
10. Ignoring Forecasts
Use apps like “My Aurora Forecast” and SpaceWeatherLive to avoid wasted nights.
