Things to Do in Alta

Known as “The City of the Northern Lights,” Alta is one of Norway’s northernmost towns and a fantastic destination for aurora seekers. Thanks to its stable inland climate, Alta offers many clear-sky nights and great chances of seeing the northern lights.

One of the most iconic attractions is the Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel – a beautifully carved ice structure rebuilt every year, offering overnight stays, dining, and ice art. For cultural insight, visitors can explore Sami traditions through reindeer sledding tours or visit the Northern Lights Cathedral, which combines architecture and aurora history.

Alta is also home to UNESCO-listed rock carvings dating back over 6,000 years, showcasing early Arctic life. In winter, snowmobile safaris, husky tours, and fatbike adventures take you deep into the surrounding tundra and forests.

Unlike coastal destinations, Alta offers a dry Arctic landscape and more predictable weather for aurora chasing. It’s a great base for both comfort and wild experiences, with fewer crowds and easy access to the raw beauty of Northern Norway.
